Our recent project in Wellington for Darroch/NZTA involved repairing rotting timber on a driveway bridge. While the job itself required precision carpentry and structural work, it was also a perfect example of how our safety-first mindset adds value for our clients. During inspection, our team identified additional hazards that could have impacted neighbouring properties. By proactively recommending further work, we not only kept the project on track but also prevented potential risks to both people and property.
Safety Is More Than Compliance — It’s Our Culture
Every job, whether it’s electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or painting, carries its own set of risks. At FBL, safety isn’t a checkbox to tick — it’s built into the way we work, from planning through to completion.
We work closely with our technicians to foster a strong safety culture that goes beyond the minimum standards. Through ongoing training, regular updates, and tools like our partnership with Safety Work Kits, we help our teams stay sharp, aware, and accountable on every job.
The Safety Work Kits Partnership
As part of our commitment to maintaining the highest health and safety standards, our partnership with Safety Work Kits gives our teams access to practical tools, resources, and ongoing training - all from an easy to use app. This month, our focus is on an essential but sometimes overlooked safety requirement: the Hazardous Substances Inventory.
Hazardous Substances Inventory — Why It Matters
When to use it:
A Hazardous Substances Inventory is legally required for any workplace that uses, handles, manufactures, or stores hazardous substances — including hazardous waste. It must be kept up to date, with the corresponding Safety Data Sheets (SDS) readily available at all times for both staff and emergency services.
Purpose:
This inventory helps to:
- Understand the hazardous substances on site.
- Work out the legal requirements to comply with.
- Plan emergency procedures effectively.
In an emergency, an inventory and SDS tells emergency workers exactly what substances are present — enabling them to act quickly and safely.
What it is:
A complete, up-to-date list of hazardous substances used, handled, or stored on site. This includes any hazardous waste and is a critical resource for managing workplace risk.
Our Commitment to Clients and Communities
From government contracts to private sector projects, our clients trust FBL not only to deliver exceptional results but to keep people and property safe in the process. The Wellington bridge project is a great reminder that safety and quality go hand-in-hand — and that going beyond the scope to identify potential hazards isn’t just good practice, it’s part of who we are.
Trusted. Professional. Safety-first. That’s FBL.
